Our vision is a world where teenage girls grow up with the full understanding and belief that they can literally do anything! A world where they assert control over their own self esteem and beliefs about their beauty, their intelligence, and their worth.
Cupcakes & Conversation was founded by Kay Hopkins, a local attorney and graduate of Petersburg High School. Over the years, she's volunteered with children and teens in school systems in DC and Virginia and with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond. Through this work, she recognized that the teenage girls she encountered had a deep desire to talk about the issues they were dealing with, especially as they related to interacting with boys. They had questions and were trying to grapple with how to tackle adolescence. She created GirlTalk to give these girls this outlet. Our goal is to allow the girls to get out their questions, fears, and concerns in a safe environment surrounded by mentors who are willing to guide them in a positive direction.
OUR WORK: WHAT WE DO
Currently, Cupcakes & Conversation has two programs designed to support girls and teens. It also has an annual scholarship that is awarded to one graduating Petersburg High School senior. Its summer program is seven weeks working with pre-teens in Richmond. Its second program is a rites of passage program based on traditional African principles of the "village" helping support a child into successful adulthood. As a developing nonprofit, we are focusing our efforts on creating solid programming one program at a time and growing at a steady pace based on the needs of the girls we serve.
Cupcakes & Conversation's mission is simply to empower teenage girls to become their greatest versions of themselves. We believe in the potential of ALL girls to be great, and we understand that the road toward greatness starts with love and support.
We commit to providing the best level of care and support that we can. We commit to keeping clear and open lines of communication with parents, while still maintaining an appropriate level of confidentiality for each teen. We commit to being role models 365 days. And we commit to treating each teen as we would want our own loved ones treated.
